Well, I beg to differ. Guns then usually had bigger rounds than our current weapons, which raise killing power and effectiveness. For example, when the M16 came into Vietnam soldiers used to using the M14 were worried that the M16 wouldn't have enough killing power to take out the enemy.

...But, as it proved, the 5.56 was lightyears more effective round on unarmored targets than the larger and slower 7.62. Points go for modern.
Plus modern guns don't have the killing power?
On Airsoft, i'm selling a customized Hi-Capa 4.3. Interested?

That's funny RustyMagnum, I seem to recall that the M16 of the Vietnam era frequently jammed, unlike its predecessor the M14. Having more killing power is irelevant if the gun won't shoot. Personally, I'd take a less effective gun that shoots every time over a more powerful one with a 1 in 10 chance of jamming right when I need it.

Re: Airsoft!!!
Yes, i don't deny that the M16 did jam in the jungle environment, but that was mostly because most of the soldiers used full automatic fire, which, even after one magazine, overheats the gun and makes it jam. Newest models (A4 designations and M4s) don't even have the automatic fire mode anymore, it's been replaced with burst fire, and they're generally made better than the A1 models meant for fast and effective producing.
And what truly matters is the general know-how. Study your gun, clean and maintain it regularly, and don't use it for what it's not supposed to be used for, like M16 wasn't supposed for continuous automatic fire.
And what makes the modern guns overally better is the amount of stuff you can have on them - sights, scopes, flashlights, lasers, grenade launchers, grips - everything to make the gun the most effective.
